EDF Plots Wind Expansion in Chile

24 Jul 2020  by renews.biz

EDF Renewables has secured approval for the financing of a 60MW extension to the Cabo Leone 1 wind farm in Chile and won a 40-year land concession that has potential for about 300MW of wind capacity.

Cabo Leones 1 is located in Chile’s Atacama region and together with Spanish partner Grupo Ibereolica Renovables the company plans to add 12 more turbines bringing total capacity up to 175.5MW.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Under the government auction programme, EDF Renewables has also won a 2600-hectare land concession in the province of Antofagasta in the north of Chile.

Chile has undertaken to have 100% renewable energy by 2040 and to be carbon neutral by 2050.

EDF Renewables currently operates gross clean power capacity of 375MW in the country, which in addition to Cabo Leones 1 includes the 146MW Bolero and 115MW Santiago solar farms.

EDF Renewables Chile director Jean-Christophe Puech said: “We are proud to reinforce our expansion in Chile through these two new wind projects.

“EDF Renewables is thus demonstrating its commitment to supporting Chile’s energy transition to a decarbonised model.”
