Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured a 110MW wind turbine supply contract from Ibereólica Renovables. The Spanish independent power producer issued the contract to develop the second phase of the Cabo Leones III wind park in Chile.
As per the terms of the contract, SGRE will supply 22 of its SG 5.0-145 wind turbines. It will then operate and maintain them for a period of ten years.
SGRE Onshore chief regions officer Enrique Pedrosa said: “We are honoured to be trusted again by Ibereólica Renovables for a new project in Chile, further reinforcing our partnership.
“We have grown stronger together in this country, which aims to eradicate the use of coal-fired electricity generators by 2040. The Cabo Leones cluster will play a key role in enabling this.
“We’re pleased to participate in Chile’s ambitious journey, especially with Ibereolica Renovables, a valued customer.”
With this new order, SGRE has become the supplier-of-choice for the Cabo Leones cluster’s three wind farms in the Atacama Desert. These have a combined capacity of 598.8MW.
The Cabo Leones wind farm cluster will use a range of wind turbines, from 2MW up to the latest Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform. These will reportedly have the capacity to offset 1.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
The Cabo Leones III farm is slated to come online by June next year with an installed capacity of nearly 600MW. This will be entirely supplied by Siemens Gamesa turbines, which it intends to deliver by December this year.
