Germany and West Africa want to cooperate more closely in climate protection and climate research, among other things to generate hydrogen as an energy source.
Africa is rich in energy sources such as sun, wind and parts of water, said Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) to conclude a trip to West Africa on Thursday in Berlin. Hydrogen can therefore be produced in Africa. “The world needs this green energy, and Africa can provide it,” said Karliczek. As a first step, a “potential atlas” on hydrogen is to be worked out. He should lay the foundation for further cooperation with African partners.
Germany is also training climate experts and helping its partners raise climate data in the region better. New projects are planned for land management and for vocational training. A decentralized energy supply through renewable energies will also be supported.
Karliczek had participated in the ministerial conference of the West African Competence Center for Climate Change and Adapted Land Management (Wascal) in Ghana’s capital, Accra. Since 2010, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been developing cooperation structures in science with Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo. The aim is to improve knowledge, among other things, on climate protection.
