Neelum Jhelum Hits Milestone in Power Generation

17 Aug 2020  by Water Power Magazine

The Pakistan Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has announced that its 969MW Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Plant has achieved yet another landmark, with the project’s contribution to the National Grid crossing the 10-billion units generation mark on 9 August, yielding revenue of over Rs.120 billion.

WAPDA says that through efficient operation, the project has not only been meeting the design generation but also exceeding the annual rated generation. During fiscal year 2019-20 it generated 4843 million units of hydel electricity against the target of 4660 million units despite the Covid-19 situation.

With four generating units of 242.25MW capacity each, Neelum Jhelum started electricity generation with commissioning of its first unit in April 2018 attaining its maximum installed generation of 969MW on August 14, 2018.

In April 2019, the project generated up to 1040 MW, beyond its installed capacity of 969MW, which WAPDA says reflects the efficiency of its electro-mechanical equipment, particularly the turbines.
