The number of electric vehicles will reach 100 million by 2028, owing to ongoing and significant improvements in battery technologies, according to a new study conducted byABI Research.

The study reveals that:

1.‘Range anxiety’ continues to be the biggest barrier to large-scale adoption of EVs

2.EV batteries need to be safer, cheaper, faster charging and have a high density of greater range to accelerate EV adoption

3.Lithium-ion batteries are the current standard for EVs, despite the short operating lifespan

4.Solid-state and lithium-silicon technologies will revolutionise the EV industry

5.EVs using silicon dominant batteries will have charging capacities in the region of 300KW, however the technology will reach commercialisation stage in 2026

James Hodgson, principal analyst at ABI Research, said: “Recent research around lithium-based chemistries has revolved around using different lithium-based batteries to provide better fire resistance, quicker charges, and longer life spans.

“The only way to significantly advance energy density is to add silicon to the Li-ion battery. The current approach of adding silicon in small incremental percentages (<10%) will enable energy density increases to 300 Wh/kg over the next 3-5 years.

“The addition of silicon alone over the next 7 years will grow the EV installed base from 8 million in 2019 to 40 million in 2025, as consumers’ ‘range anxiety” slowly eases.” For more information about the report, visit Electric Vehicle Battery and Charging Technologies
