Tesla is supplying batteries for a 1 MW hybrid energy system that Terna Energy won at a tender financed by European funds. The island of Agios Efstratios should cover 85% of its needs for electricity and hot water from renewable energy sources.
Terna Energy is creating a hybrid power and heat production system in small community in the Aegean Sea after offering the best terms at the Ai Stratis Green Island tender. Energypress reported Tesla would provide the battery system. According to the article, Schneider Electric is among the Greek company’s contractors.
Agios Efstratios, which has only 270 inhabitants, will get a wind turbine produced by Enercon, a photovoltaic station, storage and an energy management and monitoring system, the report reveals and adds TEK Thessaloniki is participating. Spyropoulos is said to be responsible for the solar power segment while that Proposis is supplying the digital solutions.
Terna agreed to operate and maintain the green island energy facility
The Centre for Renewable Sources and Energy Saving (CRES) organized the contest. Terna said the remote heating system at the green island, officially called Agios Efstratios, would include central units for heat production and hot water tanks for storage as well as a distribution network.
The firm controlled by GEK Terna agreed to design, procure, install and commission the system to enable an over 85% share of renewable sources in the island’s electricity system. It would make it almost completely energy independent. The contract is also for the operation and maintenance of the hybrid heat and power facility for 12 years.
Deadline is in just over two years
The project’s energy capacity is estimated at 1 MW and the budget is EUR 7.7 million. Terna Energy took on the obligation to construct the green island system within 25 months.
Excess electricity will used to heat water. Locals get power from a diesel-fueled generator and they mostly warm their houses with boilers on heating oil.
The project is financed from the European Union’s structural funds and the cohesion fund. The accompanying studies show generating power and heating energy will become cheaper with the new equipment.
Of note, Agios Efstratios was selected to become the country’s first green island more than ten years ago, but the project has stalled. The original vision includes the introduction of electric vehicles. Ai Stratis is one of the European Union’s Natura 2000 protected areas.
