Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. placed fourth in global electric vehicles in the January-September period of 2020. Market research company SNE Research said on Nov. 23 that Hyundai and Kia sold a combined total of 130,000 electric vehicles, including pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, worldwide during the period.
During the same period of 2019, Hyundai and Kia sold 93,000 electric vehicles, taking sixth place.
The sales growth was attributed to a brisk performance in the European market and a recovery in the U.S. and Chinese markets from the third quarter. In particular, sales of the flagship Kona Electric and the Niro EV contributed to the sales increase.
Meanwhile, Tesla came in first with 316,000 units, followed by Volkswagen Group with 233,000 units and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi with 148,000 units.
