Portuguese energy solutions provider Efacec has successfully installed three high voltage substations in Rwanda.
For the first time, the electrical distribution network of this African nation reaches a voltage level of 220kV thanks to the installation of three high voltage substations by Efacec.
The three substations, SE Mamba 220kV, SE Rwabusoro 220/110/11kV and SE Bugesera 220/110/11kV, will help contribute to the goal of full electrification in Rwanda by 2023.
These infrastructures are essential for Rwanda’s economic and social development by distributing power to the country’s rural areas.
This is the culmination of a process started in 2017, when Efacec was chosen by the winning consortium of the international tender launched by the Republic of Rwanda for the construction of three new 220kV substations.
Efacec was responsible for carrying out all electrical studies, including selectivity studies; integration of the three new substations in the dispatch; schematic design and configuration of all elements of the command, control and protection system; supply of various equipment (high, medium and low voltage, SCCP, telecommunications, chargers and batteries); sea and land transport of equipment to Rwanda; supervision of assembly work; general commissioning of the three substations and assistance to put into service. The equipment used in the command, control and protection system and in the central system was mostly made by Efacec.
This construction work will be fundamental to transport the 80MW produced at Hakan Mamba’s Power Station to the national electricity grid, to supply the new International Airport and the Bugesera Industrial Park as well. This project will make a significant contribution so that by 2023 100% of the population will be connected to Rwanda’s electricity grid.
