Electric utility company Engie has signed 650MW of corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Amazon.
Under the agreement, Engie will sell energy generated by its wind and solar facilities in the US, Italy and France to Amazon.
The facilities will supply about 1.85TWh of power, with the associated project renewable energy credits annually.
In Europe, a southern Italian plant will supply 66MW of energy, with another 15MW coming from a facility in southern France.
In the US, Engie has agreed to supply 569MW of clean energy to Amazon from its renewable energy generation facilities in Delaware, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. These will begin commercial operations in 2021 and 2022.
With these PPAs, Amazon will move toward its target of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2030 and reaching net-zero carbon by 2040.
Amazon Energy director Nat Sahlstrom said: “These new projects represent our first utility-scale renewable energy projects in Italy and France in Europe and our first projects in Delaware and Kansas in the US. Working with Engie, we are able to add 650MW of new power to grids in the US and Europe.”
