Finnish local media reported on December 23 that, according to customs statistics, in the first nine months of this year, Finnish merchandise exports to the UK fell by more than 21% over the same period last year, with a total export value of less than 1.6 billion euros. Imports from January to September totaled 1.2 billion euros, a drop of less than 4%.
Finland’s trade with the United Kingdom has traditionally been in surplus, but its volume has declined since its peak. From January to September, exports to the UK accounted for 3.9% of Finnish merchandise exports, and the country is Finland’s seventh largest exporter. The future trade prospects are still uncertain, because the post-Brexit trade negotiations have not yet found a solution to the future trade relationship between the EU and the UK.
