Shanxi, a main coal-producing area in north China, has closed 163 coal mines and abolished 146.05 million tons of yearly coal manufacture capacity over the last five years.
The province shut 57 coal mines and cut 30.19 million tons of coal manufacture capacity in 2020, according to the provincial energy bureau. The number of closures reached a record high since Shanxi began cutting outmoded coal capacity in 2016.
The coal sector once brought wealth to Shanxi but also led to a sequence of problems counting resource waste by extreme mining and a slow economy without diverse drivers and enough technological innovation.
