The Fraunhofer Institute found green power hit 183 terawatt-hours in 2020, outstripping the 178TWh from lignite, coal, oil and gas.

The performance was led by wind, which delivered 132TWh in the year, up 4.6% compared with 2019.

Onshore wind accounted for the majority of 105TWh, while offshore hit 27TWh, up from 24.5TWh.

Onshore wind capacity stood at 54.6GW while offshore was 7.7GW.

Solar meanwhile accounted for 50.7TWh of demand, up 9.3% year on year.

Elsewhere, the annual data shows that the highest capacity factor in offshore was Nordsee Ost 1 on 49.6%, followed by DanTysk on 48.1% and Baltic 1&2 on 45.9%.

The lowest, according to the figures, was Nordergrunde on 27.5%.
