Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE), through ScottishPower Renewables, has picked Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) as the preferred turbine supplier for the 3,100-MW East Anglia Hub offshore wind complex in UK waters.
The GBP-6.5-billion (USD 8.8bn/EUR 7.3bn) mega-project, with its three separate wind farms in the plans, would use over 200 units of the Siemens Gamesa 14-MW turbines.
The complex is designed to squeeze in East Anglia ONE North, East Anglia TWO and East Anglia THREE wind farms in the southern part of the North Sea waters.
Made ahead of the next Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction, this early selection allows the companies to work hand in hand in order to develop the turbine design and the Hub programme, Iberdrola said.
At present, the 1,400-MW East Anglia THREE project has secured its planning consent, while planning applications for the 800-MW East Anglia ONE North and the 900-MW East Anglia TWO are currently under examination by the UK Planning Inspectorate.
Depending on planning, construction of the complex could start in 2023, while the finish line is seen in 2026, Iberdrola added.
