AES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation, said on Wednesday that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo and the St. Nikola wind farm produced a combined 349,500 MWh of electricity in January.
The 690 MW thermal power plant AES Galabovo generated 305,696 MWh in January, or 8% of the total electricity produced in the country during the review period, AES Bulgaria said in a statement.
The St. Nikola wind farm produced 43,763 MWh of electricity in January, covering 1% of the total electricity consumption in Bulgaria, according to the statement.
The St. Nikola wind farm located near the town of Kavarna, on the Black Sea coast, consists of 52 turbines of 3 MW each. It was built in 2009 and commenced operations in 2010. The wind farm is operated by AES Geo Energy, which is majority-owned by AES Bulgaria.
The wind park accounts for about 22% to the total installed electricity generation capacity from wind power in Bulgaria, AES Bulgaria said.
In 1999, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation purchased the majority interest in Bulgaria's Maritsa East 1 project, subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the thermal power plant from Ireland's Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C) in 2005.
