Italian utility group Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) said that the 133-MW expansion of its Sao Goncalo solar farm in Brazil has reached commercial operation.
The new section to the already operating 475-MW Sao Goncalo plant will be joined by a 256-MW addition -- due online in 2021 -- to form a 864-MW solar mega-complex.
The 133-MW portion cost around BRL 422 million (USD 77.7m/EUR 64.3m) to build, added Enel, which operates the Sao Goncalo solar farms through its Brazilian renewables business Enel Green Power Brasil Participacoes Ltda.
All sections of the complex, including the 256-MW one that now is under construction, benefit from power supply contracts with corporate customers or a pool of distribution companies operating in Brazil’s regulated market.
The Sao Goncalo complex is located in the municipality of Sao Goncalo do Gurgueia, in the Brazilian northeastern state of Piaui.
Once construction the third section is finalised, the 864-MW solar farm will have more than 2.2 million modules, which will make the mammoth facility capable of generating more than 2.2 TWh per year, Enel said.
