Sri Lankan local media reported on February 18 that Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa hosted the launching ceremony of Sri Lanka's first waste-to-energy plant. This 10-megawatt power plant was built by Western Power Company, a subsidiary of Aitken Spence PLC, with a total investment of Rs 15 billion and can process 600-800 tons of municipal waste per day.
At present, Western Power Company has signed a waste supply agreement with the Colombo City Council and a 20-year standard power purchase agreement with the Ceylon Electric Power Authority.
