Southern Power Generation’s Track 4A Power Plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia has started commercial operations.
The 1.44GW combined cycle gas power plant uses GE’s first 9HA.02 gas turbines. The plant has two single-shaft generating blocks equipped with a gas turbine and an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator supplied by GE. The company’s Mark VIe integrated Plant Control System controls the plant.
Southern Power Generation chairman Dato’ Haji Nor Azman bin Mufti said: “We have a longstanding relationship with GE and we trust its HA technology will help us meet the increasing power demand and contribute to long-term energy security needs in Malaysia.
“We are proud to see how GE has adapted with hard work and efficiency to achieve the start of their first-ever commercial operation for the 9HA.02 gas turbines despite the Covid-19 pandemic without compromising on health and safety.”
GE will provide digital systems and plant improvement services for the 9HA.02 turbines, as well as major inspections along with technical advisory services. The company will also provide services and systems to the Track 4A plant for 21 years, to improve its asset visibility, reliability, and availability.
GE Digital’s Predix Asset Performance Management software would be used to monitor overall plant performance. The company’s monitoring and diagnostics centre in Kuala Lumpur will monitor and analyse the data collected from sensors throughout the plant.
The facility will generate electricity to power nearly three million Malaysian homes.
Taiwanese engineering, procurement and construction partner CTCI collaborated on the construction of the plant.
