Russian regulator Rostekhnadzor on 10 March issued a conclusion on the compliance of unit 6 of the Leningrad NPP (also known as Leningrad-II unit 2) with the requirements of technical regulations and design documentation. Sergey Perevoshchikov, head of the North European Interregional Territorial Administration for Supervision of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Rostekhnadzor, handed the approval document over to Leningrad NPP Director Vladimir Pereguda following 15 days of comprehensive at nominal power level.
"Our new unit is in full compliance with the project and is ready for safe and stable operation throughout its entire envisaged service life. We are now starting to prepare all the necessary documentation to bring the power unit into commercial operation by the end of March," said Pereguda.
The existing Leningrad NPP in Sosnovy Bor with four RBMK-1000 units is being replaced by Leningrad-II with four VVER-1200 units. Leningrad unit 1 was shut down for decommissioning on in December 2018 after Leningrad-II unit 1 (Leningrad 5) was connected to the grid in March 2018. Leningrad 6 is replacing Leningrad 2, which was closed down in November 2020 after being in operation for 45 years. The first fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor core of unit 6 in July 2020 after which it was brought to the minimum controlled power, and submitted to a series of tests. it was connected to the grid in October.
