South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction said on 31 March that it had signed a contract with China Techenergy (CTEC), a subsidiary of China General Nuclear Power Group, to supply instrumentation and control (I&C) equipment for the Xudabao NPP in China. Doosan will design, manufacture, and test the automatic instrumentation that can automatically stop the operation of a NPP if an earthquake is detected. Doosan Heavy's equipment will be supplied to the NPP in Liaoning Province by 2024. The general contract for Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors for Xudabao 3 and 4 was signed in 2019 by Rosatom's engineering subsidiary ASE and China National Nuclear Corporation.
Doosan Heavy completed development of the automatic seismic protection facility in 2011 and has supplied to all 28 nuclear plants in Korea. "We will try to win additional orders in the Chinese nuclear power plant market," Vice President Na Ki-yong said in a statement.
In 2018, Doosan Heavy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CTEC to promote cooperation.
"This contract means that Doosan's technology has been recognised by the Chinese nuclear power market," said Doosan CEO Kiyong Na. "By the end of 2050, China will have 39 nuclear power plants under construction. We will continue to seek ways to expand cooperation with CTEC for further business partnership and accomplishment in the Chinese nuclear power market."
Doosan Heavy entered the Chinese NPP market in 1997 after receiving orders from the Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Company Ltd to supply steam generators and heat exchangers for Phase III of the Qinshan nuclear power plant in Zhejiang province (a Candu 6 PHWR). In 2005, it signed a contract with China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation to supply the reactor pressure vessels for Qinshan Phase II and also supplied the reactor vessels and steam generators for the AP1000 units at Sanmen 1 and Haiyang 1 under a contract signed with State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation in 2012. CTEC's equipment has been used in several other Chinese NPPs, including those at Daya Bay, Hongyanhe, Ningde, Yangjiang, Fangchenggang and Shidao Bay.
