European Commission Looks to Produce 10 million tonnes of Renewable Hydrogen by 2030

The European Commission has set a target to install 6GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers and also produce one million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2024.

Once this is achieved, the Commission will then further expand its efforts to reach 40GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers and 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030.

These aims have been outlined in the ‘Hydrogen Strategy for a climate-neutral Europe’ which aims to build up a pipeline of viable investment projects along the hydrogen value chain to create a clean hydrogen market contributing to growth, jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To support this, the European Commission on Monday (12th April) extended invitations to 1000+ members of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance to submit applications and proposals to scale up hydrogen projects as part of the EU hydrogen strategy.

The Commission hopes that organisations will commit to developing a vast hydrogen infrastructure which will allow all European companies to benefit from the lucrative, carbon free fuel of tomorrow.

Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, said, “Clean hydrogen plays a key role in the race to decarbonise numerous sectors of our economy, while contributing to a more resilient and competitive EU industry.

“This call is an important step forward in the work of the Alliance. It will help build the project pipeline and assess and address gaps and bottlenecks in the clean hydrogen value chain.”
