Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (DHIC) is accelerating production of clean hydrogen such as blue hydrogen and green hydrogen.
The company announced on May 3 that it will produce blue hydrogen at its hydrogen liquefaction plant, which is now under construction on the premise of its Changwon plant. The liquefaction plant is scheduled to be completed in 2022. Blue hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced using natural gas, with the carbon dioxide emissions generated during the process captured and stored.
Production of green hydrogen using wind power generation is also underway on Jeju Island. The company is also considering producing clean hydrogen using small modular reactors (SMRs), a next-generation nuclear power plant.
DHIC is the world’s fifth company to develop a large gas turbine for power generation. The company is also developing hydrogen turbines, which use hydrogen only or a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas. It has been developing a hydrogen-powered combustor for 5MW hydrogen turbines since May 2020. In parallel with this project, the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials is developing a hydrogen-mixed combustor for 300MW hydrogen turbines.
DHIC is expanding its hydrogen equipment business through its subsidiary Doosan Mecatec. In 2019, Doosan Mecatec began to secure technology by making an equity investment in ReCarbon, a U.S. company that has the technology to produce hydrogen using greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, power plants, and petrochemical plants. To speed up its business, Doosan Mecatec established the hydrogen process equipment (HPE) business unit at the beginning of 2021. The unit is dedicated to making carbon resources and the hydrogen business.
DHIC has finished developing storage containers for hydrogen charging and is preparing to launch the storage container manufacturing business.
