Spanish energy company Repsol has started construction on the 860MW Delta 2 wind complex in Spain.
The complex will comprise 26 wind farms located in the Aragon region.
The first construction stage has seen work start on the La Cometa 1 and 2 projects in the province of Zaragoza.
La Cometa 1 and 2 will have a combined capacity of 60MW and are scheduled to come into operation in the first quarter of 2022.
They will comprise four and 12 turbines, respectively.
Repsol also plans to begin construction this year on three other wind farms in the complex.
Delta 2 is expected to be completed in 2023 and will supply electricity to around 800,000 homes.
The electricity generated will avoid the emission of more than 2.6 million tons of CO2 per year.
Construction of the 175MW Pi wind project, located between Palencia and Valladolid, is also expected to start this year, the company said.
Repsol plans to reach 7.5GW of low-emissions generation by 2025 and to double that figure by 2030.
The company currently has almost 3.3GW of total installed low-emission generation capacity.
By the end of the year, the company expects to have an additional 710MW of capacity in operation or at an advanced stage of construction.
The total investments foreseen in the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan amount to €18.3bn, of which 30% (€5.5bn) will be allocated to low-carbon initiatives.
