China’s infrastructure engineering technology is already at the world’s leading level, and five of the world’s top twelve hydropower stations are in China.
The Three Gorges Project, located in Sandouping Town, Yichang City, Hubei Province, has a total installed capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world. In June 2003, the first batch of units started to generate electricity.
Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station, located at the junction of Yibin City, Sichuan Province and Shuifu City, Yunnan Province, has an installed capacity of 6.4 million kilowatts, ranking 11th in the world. The first batch of generating units was put into production in November 2012.
Xiluodu Hydropower Station is located in the Jinsha River Gorge section that borders Leibo County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province and Yongshan County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, with a total installed capacity of 13.86 million kilowatts, ranking fourth in the world. The first units of the power station were put into operation in July 2013.
Wudongde Hydropower Station, located at the junction of Luquan County in Yunnan Province and Huidong County in Sichuan Province, has a total installed capacity of 10.2 million kilowatts, ranking seventh in the world. In June 2020, the first units of the power station were put into operation for power generation.
Baihetan Hydropower Station is located in Ningnan County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, with a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, ranking second in the world. The first batch of generating units will be put into production before July 2021.
