A new 46kW run-of-river hydroelectric scheme in Reading, Berkshire, England is now officially operational, with the plant set to generate 320MWh for the local community.
Located at Caversham Weir on the River Thames, the project features twin-screw Archimedes turbines and has been developed by Reading Hydro, a community benefit society set up especially the build the project.
The scheme has cost £1.15 million and has mostly been financed by investment raised through community share offers. It will earn income by selling electricity and from the feed-in-tariff (FIT).
