The seven state-run power companies of South Korea made a joint statement on Nov. 10 that they would completely stop coal-based power generation by 2050 in order to achieve carbon neutrality.
Korea Electric Power Corp., Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea South-East Power, Korea Midland Power, Korea Western Power, Korea Southern Power, and Korea East-West Power made the announcement at the opening ceremony of Bitagram International Exposition of Electric Power Technology (BIXPO) 2021 in Gwangju City.
According to the statement, they will reduce their carbon emissions to zero by shifting from coal-based power generation to renewable energy-based power generation. In this regard, they will launch solar and offshore wind power projects while expanding power generation based on ammonia and green hydrogen.
