A fully autonomous vehicle developed by Hyundai Motor will hit the road in downtown Seoul in the first half of 2022.
Hyundai Motor disclosed its plan to operate a level 4 autonomous driving vehicle in Seoul at a press conference for the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on Nov. 25.
Hyundai Motor will start RoboRide, a pilot level 4 self-driving vehicle service, in a pilot service zone in downtown Seoul in the first half of next year. Self-driving level 4 is a level at which drivers do not intervene even in emergencies, except for some situations where roads are temporarily blocked.
Hyundai Motor explained that RoboRide is designed for research and development purposes. It plans to verify its own level 4 technology directly in complex downtown areas and advance fully autonomous driving technology. A specific plan will be announced ahead of the service in 2022.
On the same day, Hyundai Motor took the wraps off a rendering image of the IONIQ 5 self-driving car to be used for the pilot operation. The model was developed by Hyundai Motor to suit domestic autonomous driving environments and reflects the design concept of the IONIQ 5.
