Siemens Gamesa has received a conditional order to supply 176 of its SG 14-222 DD turbines at Dominion Energy’s 2640MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) commercial project.
The turbine manufacturer would also service them for ten years.
The conditional order is subject to customary conditions, including the developer receiving government permitting for the project.
While the agreement is conditional, it marks a significant step in the project’s development and paves the way for installation to begin in 2024, with completion by 2026.
Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business unit, described the agreement as “historic for many reasons, most notably as the next step towards the planned deployment of our flagship SG 14-222 Direct Drive turbine.”
It also brings Siemens Gamesa’s planned blade finishing facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, a step closer.
The 2.6GW commercial project expands on the knowledge gained through the installation and operation of the two-turbine, 12MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) - Pilot project.
Comprising two SWT-6.0-154 turbines, it was the first offshore wind farm to be built in US federal waters. It has been operational since October 2020.
An SG 14-222 DD prototype was installed in November 2021 in Denmark and is now producing power.
