The Blue Circle, a Singaporean developer and operator of renewable power plants, and Philippine-based CleanTech Global Renewables Inc have secured the right to develop a 1.2-GW offshore wind park in the Philippines.
The tie-up announced it has secured exclusivity for a site off Bulalacao, in the country’s Oriental Mindoro province, by winning a service contract in a competitive process. According to the statement, the project will encompass a landbank area of roughly 40,095 ha (99,077 acres), which the partners say is “of a significant size for both floating and bottom fixed wind turbines.”
The Blue Circle and CleanTech Global have proposed to install 12-MW turbines to build what will be the Philippines’ largest offshore wind park.
“This site is ideally situated outside of major environmental constraints, away from the direct typhoon hit zone and with high winds in shallow to medium depth waters,” said Olivier Duguet, CEO of The Blue Circle.
The Philippines aims to reach a 50% renewables share by 2040. The country's offshore wind potential is estimated at more than 170 GW, as indicated in its energy roadmap devised with the help of the World Bank Group. Waters off Oriental Mindoro are best suited for offshore wind deployment.
