Belgian-based Agfa has today (March 8) announced it will make an investment for a new industrial unit to produce its Zirfon membranes for green hydrogen production.
Set to be installed in existing buildings at the company’s Mortsel, Belgium site, when completed the unit is expected to produce up to the equivalent of 20GW of electrolyser capacity per year.
Agfa’s Zirfon membranes can be used as an alternative to conventional membranes used in alkaline electrolysis. The company has said that with the Zirfon technology, electrolysers can produce up to four times more hydrogen than traditional technology.
“With this decision, we show our commitment towards the energy transition journey and the decarbonisation of industrial and transport activities,” said Pascal Juéry, CEO of Afga-Gevaert.
Juéry added that the company’s investment decision falls in line with the EU’s ambitions of producing 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen domestically by 2030.
“Our membranes have been selected for large-scale green hydrogen projects by leading players in the industry. The new production unit will allow us to play a central role in the advent of the hydrogen economy and to be ready for the expected further increase in customer demand,” said the Agfa CEO.
Last year (2022), Agfa was selected by thyssenkrupp nucera to support the development of its global green hydrogen projects by providing its Zirfon membranes.
