The geothermal project in Timanfaya is a collaboration between the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Canary Islands and the Public University of Navarra. The feasibility study for the project was announced back in April 2022. The installation will supply up to 12 kWh of geothermal energy per day.
Instead of a steam turbine, the geothermal facility will use a geothermal thermoelectric generator (GTEG). These are solid-state devices with no moving parts that can create a voltage potential using a temperature difference across a semiconductor. Thermoelectric generators require minimal maintenance, are compact, highly robust, and appropriate for low-capacity power production.
