Singapore’s Meranti Power to Build Two Gas-Fired Units

25 May 2023  by Asian Power

Each unit will have a 340-megawatt capacity.

Meranti Power, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) will be developing two 340-megawatt (MW) open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) units which are expected to be ready for operations by June 2025.

In a statement, EMA said the plants will use natural gas as a primary fuel but can tap disease as a backup. The units are also “future ready” as they can take up to 30% hydrogen and could be ramped up to 100% with the necessary upgrades.

Meranti has appointed Jurong Engineering and Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific for turnkey developments, and AECOM Singapore to support the project management and implementation.

According to EMA, the new plants will replace the retiring capacity and serve as backup for future electricity demand growth.

The existing OCGTs in the country are now over 30 years old and are up for replacement.
