The work will be a part of the Geothermal Ukraine project, a grant project supported by the Icelandic Sustainable Development Goals Partnership Fund. The main project goal is to identify the most attractive geothermal areas and perform a pre-feasibility study for three types of direct use of geothermal projects – district heating, industrial or tourism use, and combined utilization.
Geothermal Ukraine is a non-profit R & D organization founded in April 2022 that is committed to promoting geothermal research and development in Ukraine. The group combines the efforts, knowledge, and skills of professionals in the field of petroleum engineering, geoscience, and other academic/research expertise in fields related to geothermal energy. With this synergy, the group hopes to contribute to the development of the geothermal potential of Ukraine and ensure energy independence and security.
The geothermal resources in the western region of Ukraine have already been partly investigated. Studies on the geothermal potential of Ukraine have been done since the 1950’s, resulting in a large selection of thermophysical and chemical data, identified geological structures, isotherm maps, resource capacity maps, and estimated figures of geothermal reserves. The planned study with Verkis will mostly be based on published scientific papers, reports, and actual subsurface data from the oil and gas fields.
From a technical perspective, the preliminary assessment of the resource will be conducted and a basic concept will be proposed for harnessing the geothermal resources. The project partners also plan to engage in dialogues with the local stakeholders in order to formulate a development plan for the implementation phase.
