Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) has submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Ichnusa Wind Power Project to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE).
The submission marks Italy’s third floating wind farm project to reach EIA submission and the first for a floating wind project off the Sardinian coast.
As a reminder, Italy currently has one offshore wind farm built in its waters, the 30 MW Taranto (or Beleolico) project, developed by Renexia.
COP is leading development for Ichnusa on behalf of the project’s owners, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partner through its Flagship Funds, and GreenIT, the joint venture owned 51 per cent by Plentitude (Eni) and 49 per cent by CDP Equity.
“We are pleased to reach this important milestone for the Ichunusa Wind Power Project. After the submission of the EIA for 7SeasMed on January 2022, we now reach the same milestone for Ichnusa, which is an important step for our consortium in Italy,” said Michele Schiavone, COP Italy CEO.
“Furthermore, Ichnusa’s location offers some of the best wind resources in the Mediterranean, making it an ideal spot to develop Sardinia’s first offshore wind project.”
The Ichnusa Wind Power Project is a 504 MW floating project planned approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of Sardinia.
According to its developers, the project is said to contribute toward the Italian Government’s target of 20 GW of operational offshore wind by 2030 and is designed to support local supply chain development by the second half of the decade.
Ichnusa is part of a larger, almost 3 GW, floating portfolio COP is developing in Italy.
The portfolio, which could power approximately 2.5 million Italian households, includes the 500 MW Tyrrhenian project located in Latium off the coast of Civitavecchia, three projects off the coast of Sardinia including Ichnusa, the 500 MW Nurax project, the 1,000 MW Poseidon project, and the 250 MW 7SeasMed project located in Sicily off the coast of Marsala.
