Construction of the 17-MW binary geothermal power plant in the Tiwi geothermal facility in Albay, Philippines is progressing as expected and is on-track to be operational by the end of 2023. This is based on an update provided by Aboitiz Power Corp. and subsidiary AP Renewables Inc. (APRI).

Plans for a binary plant to expand the installed capacity at the Tiwi geothermal field were announced in mid-2022. Construction commenced at the start of 2023. Ormat Technologies and Desco Inc. are the EPC contractors for this project. Ormat had also built and designed APRI’s binary power plant facilities in the Makban geothermal power plant

The update on the Tiw binary geothermal plant was given as part of an announcement by APRI that the operations of the Tiwi geothermal power plant remained normal amidst the increased activity of the Mayon Volcano, about 24 kilometers from the facility. According to APRI President and CEO Jeffrey Estrella, there had been no significant changes in the temperature and fluid flow observed in the geothermal field.

“The complex gross generation for the past week has been around 120 MW with no incident relating to Mayon’s unrest,” assured Estrella.
