The MOU envisages setting up what it calls self-identified pumped storage projects of at least 2 GW and renewable energy projects (ground mounted solar projects/floating solar projects) of 1 GW or above in Odisha. The specific projects targeted, or their locations, were not disclosed.
The MoU was signed by Shri Rajat Gupta, Executive Director (SBD&C), NHPC and Shri Trilochan Panda, Managing Director, GRIDCO Limited. It was signed in the presence of Shri Nikunja B. Dhal, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Energy, Govt. of Odisha cum Chairman, GRIDCO, Shri Biswajit Basu, Director (Projects), NHPC Limited, and other senior officers from both the organizations.
NHPC is predominantly a hydro player, with total installed capacity of 7,071 MW of renewable power, which includes 100 MW of wind and solar, through its 24 power stations, including 1,520 MW through a subsidiary. In addition, 5,999 MW of hydro and 105 MW of solar plants are under construction.
Earlier this month, NHPC signed a similar agreement for Maharashtra State.
In early 2022, Hydro Review announced that NHPC Limited signed a promoters agreement with Green Energy Development Corporation of Odisha Ltd. (GEDCOL) to develop 500 MW of floating solar projects on a variety of water bodies in Odisha.
