The modernisation involved switching operations to peroxide refining, which is easy to use and is more cost-effective, the company said, increasing the recovery factor for the refinery from 98.2% to 100% for uranium processing. The removal of organic chemicals from the process also lessens injury risk.
Kazatomprom Chairman Yerzhan Mukanov congratulated those involved in the project, which was carried out by Kazatomprom's own service enterprises, using its own technologies: Kazatomprom: IHT LLP was the developer of the project, and Mashzavod LLP was the general contractor. "The refining shop will provide jobs for over 60 people. I wish the labor collective prosperity, safe working conditions and the fulfillment of all production plans," Mukanov said.
Kazatomprom-SaUran was created in 2015 when TMCE LLP and Stepnoye-RU LLP were combined. Kazatomprom is the sole stakeholder of the limited liability partnership, which mines and processes uranium from deposits in the Turkestan region, including Kanzhugan, South Moyynkum, Central Moyynkum, Uvanas and Mynkuduk.
