Norway: 12,801 Bevs Registered Over June

New registrations of electric cars in Norway continued to increase for the end of the first half of 2023. With 12,801 new electric cars, the result not only surpassed that of May, but also that of June 2022. The most popular model in Norway last month was the Tesla Model Y by a wide margin.

The 12,801 new electric cars in June represent an increase of 2,028 vehicles compared to May with its 10,773 new e-registrations. After the small slump in April, e-registrations increased for the second month in a row. And also on an annual basis, June stands for growth: in June 2022, 11,722 new electric cars were put on the road, now there are 1,079 more e-cars.

Across all drive types, 15,556 new cars were registered in Norway in June, according to the Road Information Agency (OFV). This is 665 more vehicles than in June 2022, or an increase of 4.5 per cent. As pure electric cars increased by 1,079 units year-on-year, they grew faster than the overall market.

The 12,801 pure electric cars (the SFO does not distinguish between BEVs and FCEVs in its statistics, but fuel cell cars make up a very small proportion) therefore represent a market share of 82.2 per cent – up from 80.7 per cent in May. In addition, there were 1,354 plug-in hybrids, giving them a market share of 8.7 per cent. This means that 90.9 per cent of all new registrations in Norway in June had a charging plug.

823 hybrids that cannot be charged externally (i.e. mild and full hybrids) represent 5.3 per cent of the market share. 231 pure petrol cars represent 1.5 per cent of the total market, the 357 new diesel cars represent 2.3 per cent.

These figures for hybrids and internal combustion engines should be kept in mind when looking at the registration statistics by model. In June, the Tesla Model Y again won the model ranking with 3,127 new registrations, ahead of the VW ID.4 (1,176) and the Skoda Enyaq (759). In other words, even if you add PHEVs, HEVs and purely internal combustion vehicles, you only get 2,765 new registrations – so more Model Ys were registered in Norway than non-electric cars.

Tesla’s Model Y is also far ahead in the entire first half of 2023: 15,452 registrations from January to June mean a share of 23.2 per cent among all models in this period – together with the other model series, Tesla came to 25.3 per cent market share with 16,847 vehicles in the first half of the year. Even if you add up the three largest brands of the VW Group, VW, Skoda and Audi, the result is only 14,618 new registrations in the same period.

Let’s go back to the monthly statistics for June: The Volvo XC40 and Toyota bZ4X series, which have performed well so far this year, lost some ground in June with 463 and 234 new registrations respectively. In between are vehicles such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E (406), the Audi Q4 e-tron (383), Audi Q8 e-tron (337) and the VW ID.3 (251). As usual, a special role is played by the VW ID. Buzz takes on a special role: 310 vehicles are registered in the passenger car evaluation – but 327 commercial vehicles are added, which actually brings the Hanover MEB van to 637 new registrations – and thus to fourth place behind the Model Y, ID.4 and Enyaq.
