The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is aiming to start the commercial operations of the Palayan Bayan binary power plant in the Bacon-Manito (BacMan) geothermal field in the Philippines by September 2023. The 28.9-MW binary power plant will provide additional installed capacity by utilizing the waste heat of the 130-MW BacMan geothermal power plant.
Construction on the Palayan Bayan binary power plant started in mid-2021. Prior to this, Turboden had been selected as the supplier of the ORC power plant for the project.
When operational, the binary power plant will help reduce 72,200 tons of carbon emissions and generate 600 jobs for the nearby communities. EDC had also previously commissioned a 3.6-MW binary power plant to expand the capacity of its Mindanao geothermal power plant.
In late 2022, the Philippine-based geothermal developer announced a five-year growth plan which also included the construction of the 20-MW Tanawon geothermal power plant and a 28-MW binary power plant in Mahanagdong.
