Tractebel and First Light Fusion have signed a framework agreement to provide specialist engineering expertise for the development of First Light’s Machine 4 (M4) in Oxford, UK.
The M4 research and experimental facility will house the largest pulsed power driver in the world with a 75 metre diameter. It will be used to demonstrate gain – the process of getting more energy out of fusion than is required to create it. Tractebel will help deliver the M4 which First Light will use to demonstrate Net Energy Gain, as demonstrated at the US National Ignition Facility in December 2022.
First Light works on a approach to fusion using a projectile, a branch of inertial confinement fusion.
