The 35-MW geothermal power plant of Sosian Energy in the Menengai geothermal field in Kenya has started supplying electricity to the national grid. This is the first of three power plant planned for Menengai, which will have a combined capacity of 105 MW.

According to Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, electricity from the geothermal power plant is being sold at a rate 6.9 US cents or about Sh9.6 per kWh. This is a competitive price and is expected to help displace expensive power generating capacity mostly from thermal plants. State-owned Geothermal Development Company (GDC) drilled the wells, built the steam gathering facilities, and is selling the steam to the three companies.

Sosian Energy, thru Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power Ltd. (SMGPL), is one of three Independent Power Producers (IPPs) that were awarded rights to build and operate geothermal power plants in Menengai, Kenya.

Initial reports indicated that the Sosian geothermal power plant was supposed to start operations by the end of 2022. However, final preparations for the power plant operation were reported as of May 2023.

Construction of the second power plant in Menengai by UK firm Globeleq officially kicked off in June 2023. Also with a target installed capacity of 35 MWW, this power plant is expected to start operations by 2025.
