Canadian oil extraction company Frontera Energy Corp (TSE:FEC) has launched a 7.85-MWp captive solar power generation project at its CPE-6 oil field in the Colombian department of Meta.
The design and assembly of the plant has been entrusted to Enel X, the energy solutions brand of Colombian electric utility Enel Colombia. Announcing its client’s initiative this week, Enel Colombia said that the investment in the project, known as Ikotia solar park, is valued at over USD 7.5 million (EUR 7.01m).
Ikotia, meaning “rays of sun” in local indigenous language, is Frontera Energy's first solar project. It has been designed to use more than 16,800 solar panels stretching across eight hectares (19.8 acres) of land.
Once assembled, the plant will be connected to the medium voltage grid. It will generate around 11.3 GWh of electricity per year, which Frontera Energy will use to power production operations and offices at the CPE-6 oil field in the town of Puerto Gaitan.
The Ikotia solar farm is due to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2024.
