The agreement was announced in Manila before the opening of the 4th Philippine International Geothermal Conference. The event was hosted by New Zealand Ambassador Peter Kell and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE).
In attendance were industry leaders from the Philippines and the rest of the world including the Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the President of the National Geothermal Association of the Philippines (NGAP), the President of the Philippine Geothermal Production Inc. (PGPC), President and CEO of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), and the President and CEO of the Aboitiz Power Renewable Inc (APRI).
As the third-largest geothermal energy generator in the world, the Philippines market holds a pivotal role in this partnership. For over a decade, GNS and MBC have developed strong ties by providing geoscience and geoengineering expertise to the sector. In recognition of this, the relationship agreement extends to officially supporting the Philippines geothermal sector in achieving ambitious decarbonization goals set by the government.
Greg Thompson, CEO MB Century says the agreement also focuses on other international key markets such as Indonesia, Taiwan, and Japan, with plans to expand into the USA, South America, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Turkey, and Italy.
“This partnership is a great example of New Zealand companies working together to leverage New Zealand expertise globally. Both MB Century and GNS Science have worked at the forefront of geothermal energy development and optimisation for decades. We are motivated to share our collective experience with other countries globally to maximise the potential of this renewable energy resource,” said Gary Wilson, General Manager of Research, Strategy and Partnerships at GNS Science.
“This agreement provides a robust framework for our geothermal cooperation, encompassing joint investigations, international projects, scientific and technical exchanges, and personnel growth and development. We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and look forward to a fruitful partnership with GNS Science as we pioneer innovative solutions in the field of energy,” Thompson added.
