Geothermal developer and operator Deutsche Erdwärme has signed a permission agreement with Forst Baden-Württemberg (ForstBW) for the use of a property for geothermal development near Philippsburg in the district of Karlsuhe in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

There are a number of studies that need to be completed before construction work on the geothermal plant can start. As part of compesnatory measures, Deutsche ErdWärme will conduct reforestation w

ForstBW is a public law institution responsible for the management of over 324,000 hectares of state forest in the state of Baden-Württemberg. ForstBW aims to work in an ecologically exemplary, socially balanced and economically successful manner.

“We want to protect our climate and make a contribution to the energy and heat transition. By generating geothermal energy, Baden-Württemberg is taking a further step towards climate neutrality. ForstBW is fulfilling the mandate from the coalition agreement and living up to its role model in measures against global warming,” said Peter Hauk MdL, Minister for Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of ForstBW.

“We are pleased that, in addition to wind power, solar energy and wood, we can now use geothermal energy to create the basis for the extraction of another natural resource. We are sending an important signal for the future,” added Max Reger, CEO of ForstBW.

A growing portfolio

“We are pleased to have found another location for a geothermal energy plant with the property in Philippsburg. The plant in Philippsburg will make a further contribution to converting the region’s heat supply to renewable energies.” said Herbert Pohl, Managing Director of Deutsche ErdWärme.

The Philippsburg project is the latest addition to a impressive portfolio of geothermal projects of Deutsche ErdWärme currently under development. The most advanced of these is the Graben-Neudorf project which had recently tapped into a geothermal resource with temperatures of over 200 degrees Celsius – substantially higher than what was expected.
