The two sites were offered during a competitive tender held by the Philippine Department of Energy a few months ago. A third site, the 40-MW Mabini Geothermal Power Project, received no bids.
EDC had previously announced that a USD 1 billion budget over the next three years to support capacity growth efforts, including the drilling of new wells and other growth initiatives. In late 2022, EDC announced a five-year expansion plan that targets 100 MW of additional power generation capacity, which involves the expansion of existing sites and development of greenfield sites.
As a testament to the company’s resilience, EDC had recently celebrated the 40th year anniversary of the Tongonan geothermal power plant in Leyte.
The Philippines has several geothermal projects on the pipeline as the country works to regain its previous standing as the country with 2nd largest installed geothermal power capacity in the world.
