Ark Energy, part of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KRX:010130), has officially launched the construction of the first stage of the SunHQ Hydrogen Hub in Queensland, Australia, the Sydney-based company said on Wednesday.

The facility will be installed in Townsville, with the project seen to create a site for green hydrogen production and refuelling. In phase one, a 1-MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser is expected to produce 155 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, more than half of which will go to power the ultra-heavy Hyzon Motors fuel cell electric trucks (FCET) owned by Ark Energy and leased to its sister company Sun Metals. The trucks will be used to transport zinc from the Port of Townsville to Sun Metals’ zinc refinery.

The remaining part of the green hydrogen output will be sold to major industrial customers.

SunHQ will be supplied with electricity from a behind-the-meter 124-MW solar park. Under the plan, green hydrogen production is due to begin by the end of next year’s first quarter.

Queensland government’s Hydrogen Industry Development Fund, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) are backing SunHQ with debt or grant financing.
