Some of the funding will be provided through the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), through which Italy receives grants and loans totalling some EUR 190bn in 2021-2026 to support post-Covid pandemic economic growth and the nation’s green transition.
As part of its national recovery plan, Italy aims to build more than 1 GW of innovative agrivoltaic projects by mid-2026.
Despite repeated requests, Italy’s energy ministry was not available to provide information on what proportion of the total funding is to be provided through the RRF or where else it will originate from.
"Good agriculture can make a great contribution to decarbonisation," energy minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said in a statement late Friday. The funding ensures Italy is “on the right track to making its agricultural sector greener and more innovative, and fostering the transition towards climate neutrality”.
The funding rollout will last through December 2024, according to the EC.
Last month, Italy received approval from the EC to provide EUR 100m in state aid for electrolyser production-funding plans aimed at spurring the nation’s green hydrogen industry.
