Japan-based Renova Inc. on Nov. 20 announced its 75-megawatt (MW) Morinomiyako Biomass Power Plant began operations on Nov. 18. The facility is fueled with wood pellets and palm kernel shells.

The facility is located in Miyagi Prefecture, an area impacted by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. According to Renova, the area was later designated as a disaster hazard area and has since been transformed into a major industrial central next to Sendai Port. The biomass project was developed as a part of an effort to revitalize the local economy.

The Morinomiyako facility is one of several biomass power plants developed by Renova. In addition to Morinomiyako, the company’s operating biomass plants include the 20.5 MW Akita Biomass facility and the 75 MW Kanda Biomass plant. Biomass plants currently under construction include the 75 MW Ishinomaki Hibarino Biomass plant, the 75 MW Omaezakikou Biomass plant, the 74.8 NW Tokushima Tsuda Biomass plant, and the 49.9 MW Karatsu Biomass facility.
