SSE Renewables has announced its final investment decision to move forward with a 150MW/300MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Warrington, Cheshire.

The BESS will be built at the site of SSE’s former Fiddler’s Ferry coal-fired power station, which was decommissioned in March 2020, with final demolition of its cooling towers completed earlier this month.

The new asset will use the existing grid connection at the site and is expected to be capable of running for up to two hours at a time.

This is the renewable developer’s fourth BESS project to receive a final investment decision, bringing its total pipeline capacity for projects in the construction phase to 670MW.

“It is very exciting to have taken a final investment decision for our 150MW Fiddler’s Ferry BESS project in Warrington,” said Richard Cave-Bigley director of solar & battery at SSE renewables.

Cave-Bigley also called the investment decision the “latest milestone for solar and battery development for SSE Renewables.”

The company also recently began construction of what is said to be the UK’s largest BESS – a 320MW/640MWh project in Yorkshire.
