Iberdrola has achieved a significant milestone in the commissioning of the Tâmega hydroelectric complex by successfully linking one of the two turbines of the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric power plant to the grid. This accomplishment positions the plant to commence commercial operation by the end of March 2024.
The Tâmega Hydroelectric Complex comprises three power plants: the Alto Tâmega plant, boasting an installed capacity of 160MW; the Gouvães pumped storage plant (880MW); and the Daivões plant (118 MW), both of which have been operational since 2022.
Situated at the base of the Alto Tâmega Dam, a double-curvature dome dam measuring 105m in height, with 220,000m3 of concrete and a crest length of 335m, the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric plant marks the final turbine to become operational within the complex.
Following the successful connection of the first turbine to the grid, the second turbine is slated to follow suit, with its grid connection expected in February 2024. By the end of March 2024, the entire Tâmega hydroelectric complex is anticipated to be in commercial operation, boasting a total installed capacity of 1158MW.
