Italy's Ansaldo Nucleare to Refurbish Romanian Nuclear Plant Unit, Develop Two More

Italy's Ansaldo Energia signed a deal on Thursday to carry out work at a nuclear plant in Romania with a financing line of up to 2 billion euros ($2.15 billion) from state export credit agency SACE.

The memorandum of understanding with Romania's Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) (ROSNN.BX), opens new tab was inked as Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu travelled to Rome for a bilateral summit.

In a statement, Ansaldo said its Ansaldo Nucleare subsidiary would handle engineering and procurement for extending the life of Unit 1 of the Cernavoda plant, in consortium with Canada's Candu Energy and South Korea's Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power.

The Romanian national nuclear energy company SNN started in 2017 a refurbishment project of Unit 1 worth an estimated 1.85 billion euros and aimed at extending its lifespan by 30 years.

As part of Thursday's deal, Ansaldo Nucleare will also help SNN complete Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda plant, the Italian firm said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, addressing the press at the Italy-Romania summit, hailed the agreement as "very significant ... in a particularly strategic sector for European development".
